No, Bear mattresses do not contain fiberglass.
Instead of using fiberglass or spraying chemical flame retardants, all Bear mattresses are designed to be fire-safe using safer, high-quality materials. We achieve this by either quilting fire-resistant fabric directly into the mattress cover or encasing the foam in durable fire-resistant “socks.”
These materials are made from a blend of non-woven hydrated silica, rayon, polyester, and cotton.
Hydrated silica is often misunderstood, but it is not fiberglass. It’s a naturally occurring compound that makes up about 12% of the Earth’s surface and can be found in opal (yes—the gemstone). It has a long history of safe use and is recognized by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) as Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS). It’s also commonly used in everyday products like toothpaste and even in beer production as a stabilizing agent.
This approach allows us to meet fire safety standards while keeping our mattresses fiberglass-free.
